The HCL Enterprises group of companies (HCL group), which included HCL Infosystems Ltd. (HCL) and HCL Technologies Ltd., was one of the leaders in the computer hardware manufacturing and IT services industries in India. After taking some pioneering steps in environment protection in 2007 and 2008, the group seemed to have lost its first-mover advantage by 2009. In 2007 and 2008, HCL had occupied the number one slot among Indian electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers assessed by Greenpeace India on several parameters to determine the 'green' factor. In the fifth Indian edition (December 2008) of the Guide to Green Electronics Report of Greenpeace India, the company had scored 4.12 on 106, the highest among Indian 'electronics' companies assessed by Greenpeace.

Greenpeace had lauded HCL's efforts in going green and taking back obsolete products from customers in an ecologically responsible manner. In March 2009, when the sixth Indian edition of the Guide to Green Electronics Report of Greenpeace India was released, HCL stood at a distant second place behind Wipro7. While HCL's score remained almost the same, Wipro had shot past HCL to score 5.5 on 10, to top the table among Indian companies as well as to become the fifth ranked company worldwide on the given set of criteria...
